Lesson Overview:
- After reading the book "If You Give a Cat a Cupcake" by: Laura Numeroff, students will illustrate their understanding of the text by designing and creating their own 2-dimensional cupcakes. Students will follow the style of artist Wayne Thiebaud and his colorful creations.

Cupcakes are depicted in books, games, television shows, and toys. The book, If You Give a Cat a Cupcake, does an excellent job illustrating cupcakes. Phones are now equipped with applications to help children "make" their own cupcakes and cakes! If your classroom is equipped with Ipads or computers for each child, visit the NGA Lesson and Activities website for an extension activity using Cake Maker.

Evaluation:
- Students are able to explain the cause and effect relationship of the cupcake and the events in the story.
- Students colorfully decorated the background of their paper using warm or cool colors.
- Students are able to identify analogous colors.
- Students understand the effect of mixing glue, shaving cream and food coloring.
- Students took their time creating the bottoms of their cupcakes and creatively decorated them with chalk pastels.
- Students successfully applied frosting to their cupcakes.
- Students completed a finished product and successfully cleaned up their area.
